2008-05-05 MatriCal plans move from Sirti to Riverwalk
May 1: MatriCal Inc., a Spokane company that designs and manufactures products used for scientific research, says its planned move to the Riverwalk Plaza here will allow it to keep its operations and corporate offices consolidated in one location. Margo Buckles, an administrator for MatriCal, says the new location, at 1007 E. Trent, is ideal, because at 17,000 square feet it’s bigger than other locations the company considered elsewhere in the University District, where it wants to stay. Currently, MatriCal is located in a 10,000-square-foot space in the Sirti Building, at 665 N. Riverpoint Blvd.

2008-05-01 Ridin' the multimedia wave
May1: Once confined largely to 18 mm film and slides as its production media, followed by Betamax and VHS videotape, the company now offers software and Internet-related services, does all of its editing digitally, and converts most of its work to digital videodiscs. In fact, electronic business cards—pocket-sized mini-discs that contain short video presentations about clients, businesses or operations— “have become a mainstay for us,” Gibby says.

2008-04-29 ReliOn draws more investors
April 29: Spokane’s clean-energy startup ReliOn has received an additional $23 million from PCG Clean Energy & Technology Fund of La Jolla, Calif., and Robeco Clean Tech Private Equity of Rotterdam, Netherlands. ReliOn, which was spun off from Avista Corp. in 2003, produces backup hydrogen fuel cells for cell towers, air traffic control systems and other uses. Customers have installed the power units in roughly 450 locations. Of those, between 30 and 40 are for air traffic backup systems.

2008-04-29 ReliOn raises $23 million
April 28: The Spokane company said the latest round included money from new investors PCG Clean Energy & Technology Fund LLC of La Jolla, Calif., and Robeco Clean Tech Private Equity II of Rotterdam, Netherlands. In a statement, ReliOn said the “funding will be used to accelerate the sales and marketing of its fuel cells, and continued technology innovation and development for future product technologies and applications.”

2008-04-29 Unique design, fast recharge could make flashlight the next big thing
April 27: If Moscow-based Ivus Industries rocks the world with its smart ultracapacitor technology, the flash point for that success will come later this year, in the form of a 12-inch, 1-pound flashlight. The company calls the flashlight, for now, the Lightning-180. If it’s as successful as they hope, it will deserve to be called The Two-Minute Wonder for its quick recharge time.

2008-04-09 Itron and WSU-ASL Establish Research Partnership
April 9: Itron Inc. and the Washington State University Applied Sciences Lab (ASL) announced today the establishment of a research partnership between the two organizations. Itron provided a gift to ASL of $250,000, which will be matched by The Cheney Cowles Foundation. The organizations also entered into a research agreement for $450,000 over three years, for a total commitment to ASL of $700,000 over five years.

2008-03-17 Aegis Biosciences receives National Institutes of Health SBIR grant
March 17: Aegis Biosciences, LLC, an innovative biomedical materials firm and Sirti incubator client, is pleased to announce receipt of a $150,895 Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institutes of Health. The grant, entitled “Peptide-Modified Sulfonated Styrene Block Copolymers for Vascular Applications”, and performed in collaboration with Case Western University and the Cleveland Clinic, will help Aegis continue to develop and perfect their new family of biomaterials that guide biological repair and promote healing.

2008-03-04 E. Washington agency offers help to technology start-ups

2008-02-26 Gary Flood appointed to Sirti Board of Directors
February 20: Gary Flood, President and CEO of ReliOn, has been appointed by Governor Chris Gregoire to serve a three year term on the Sirti board of directors. Sirti is a Washington State economic development agency focused on accelerating the development and growth of technology companies in the Inland Northwest. Mr. Flood’s term will continue until June 30, 2009.

November 28: In a tougher real estate market, a new Sandpoint company is banking on its 3-D online mapping tool giving agents a technological edge. GeoData Technologies, formed around a computer application allowing agents or potential home buyers to virtually explore property listings or communities by overlaying information on aerial images, recently unveiled its SiteSeer3D product at a national Realtor convention.
